Generally speaking, most people would not move if they didn’t have to. Sure, if you need to upsize or downsize, find a better neighbourhood or relocate for work, then, of course, you’ll move.
But few people move if they have no real reason. In fact, because of all the work and stress involved, most people would choose root canal treatments before deciding to move for little or no reason.
The sense that moving is one of the most stressful, painful bits of drudgery in our lives has brought about a number of misconceptions about it. And not just about the bad parts of moving, like the disruption to your life, but also about some of the easier parts, like getting lots of boxes from the LCBO.
Without further ado, here are a few bits of fiction surrounding moving and the true facts that they hide.
1. Fiction: Moving Companies are More or Less the Same
This one leads many people to simply find the cheapest moving company, which can be the costliest move they make.
Fact:
You don’t move often and many shady movers take advantage of the fact. When you try to get your money back for something like damaged furniture, you have a hard time finding them. Always check out and choose reputable moving companies.
2. Fiction: It’s Cheaper to Move Yourself
This one is one of those straight-line equations that seem to make sense. If we move ourselves, we save money on the cost of hiring a mover.
Fact:
When you weigh the out-of-pocket expenses you have, like truck rentals, and the added stress, time and risk to the wellbeing of your furniture, it can be way less costly to hire a professional mover.
3. Fiction: If I Get Lots of Cardboard Boxes, My Stuff Will Be Okay During the Move
Having lots of containers, even sturdy cardboard boxes, so everything you have has a place in one and is protected, is a good idea. But not any container will do.
Fact:
While using containers versus moving loose items is a great idea, the wrong containers can be a disaster. Containers get stacked many times in your move. If they are of too many different sizes, even of solid plastic containers, those stacks can be unstable and collapse. And we won’t even talk about the damage a weaker cardboard box will cause if it happens to be at the bottom of the stack.
