We all know how stressful moving day can be: boxes everywhere, people in and out, worrying about setting up the new house, etc., can make it easy for seemingly small issues to get lost in the shuffle. However, if one of those small issues is moving day theft, your minor issue can quickly turn into a major one!
Don’t assume that because there are plenty of people around that it is safe to leave the front door open while you move boxes out. Those who are bold enough to take your stuff are willing to make the most of this opportunity. So, remove that opportunity! Make sure that the door is closed at all times, that your property remains within view of someone all the time, and if someone you do not recognize starts hanging around, keep an eye out and remove the temptation.
Moving into an apartment? Don’t assume that your stuff is safe – ever! If you are having to climb up and down the stairs all day, and leave your stuff outside, make sure that it stays in a locked vehicle if possible. Anything left unattended will likely be perceived as fair game. Also, as with a house, if you are not in the apartment, make sure the door stays closed. It may not be as convenient, but at least your stuff will be protected.
Identity theft can also be a big problem on or after moving day. Because of our tendency to toss that which is no longer necessary, bills, important notices, etc., this can make us incredibly vulnerable to identity theft. Make sure that any documents containing important information are shredded, or kept then disposed of properly.
One of the best ways to prevent moving day theft is to enlist the services of a moving company to oversee the entire process. This way you can benefit from the added personnel and eyes on the ground, and can ensure a more efficient and effective move overall. Just make sure to meet and greet the movers at the beginning of the day so that both parties can recognize and identify those who should be around the move site and those who should not be!
Also, make sure that the company you choose to work with is one with a proven track record. Experience and reputation speak volumes as far as being able to trust the employees. In contrast, using a company you found on a flyer tacked to a lamppost may not be the smartest choice as far as keeping your valuable property in your possession.
