New Tecumseth is one of Ontario’s newest incorporated towns, established in 1991.
It encompasses the smaller towns of Tottenham, Beeton, Alliston and the main New Tecumseth seat in the northwest corner of the town lines.
While predominantly rural, New Tecumseth has a large collective population of 30,000 people. The town is growing at a steady rate of 9 percent, according to the most recent census statistics. Many of the newer residents work in Toronto area cities or in Barrie to the north.
No matter which community you settle in New Tecumseth, you are sure to enjoy the friendly local mindset and the dedication to making the community better year after year.
Things to Do in New Tecumseth
Despite its rural character, much effort has been put into expanding municipal services and recreational facilities for locals. Banting Heritage Park is an excellent example. The historical home of Sir Frederick Banting, a famous medical scientist and Nobel Prize co-winner, this building was the subject of a lengthy restoration project funded by multiple charity organizations and business contributors.
Now the 107 acre farm and public park features the fully-restored three story brick farmhouse which serves as part museum, part community gathering venue. There is also a Banting Legacy Walking trail and picnic areas.
The Gibson Centre in Alliston is another community cultural mainstay. Its building is a restored 19th century factory converted into an exhibit and performance venue. Plays, concerts, lectures and private events like weddings are all hosted there.
Tottenham Conservation Center offers walking trails, camping facilities and a beach area along its large pond. Tottenham’s Fitness & Community Center nearby has both an outdoor and indoor skating rink, a gymnasium, a fitness area and meeting rooms for both youths and seniors.
There is also the Glimmer Memorial Gardens next door, offering a great peaceful spot to linger under the gazebo.
Several golf courses operate in the New Tecumseth area, including Woodington Lake Golf Club, The Club at Bond Head, the Ponderosa Golf and Country Club and the Nottawasaga Inn Resort Golf Club.
New Tecumseth Schools
Area children attend one of several schools available in each of the main towns. In the New Tecumseth town area, there is the Banting Memorial High School, Ernest Cumberland Elementary, St. Paul’s Catholic School and Alliston Community Christian School.
Beeton residents can send their children to the Monsignor JE Ronan Catholic School or Tecumseth Beeton Elementary. Tottenham has the Tottenham Public School, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School and Tecumseth South Central Public School closer towards the middle of the town territory.
