Are you a collector? It doesn’t matter if it is records, baseball cards, wine or swords because we all have that one thing we like to collect. When it is time to move, you might be wondering what the best way to move your collection is. Many collections have very valuable pieces that you wouldn’t want to have damaged. Here are some tips for moving your collections.
Document It Thoroughly
Before you start packing you want to take an inventory of everything you have. First, this gives you an opportunity to thumb through your favorite things, again. Secondly it will help you to develop a list of everything that is in your collection. As part of your inventory you may want to take pictures as well. All of this can help you to fully document exactly what it is you are going to be moving and what condition it is in. This a great help if you need to file an insurance claim. You have insurance right?
Get Insurance
You may already have insurance on your collection. If you do, then you need to make sure that your insurance has a rider that will cover moves. If it doesn’t you may need to purchase additional insurance that will cover you during the move.
If you do not have insurance, this is a great time to get some. Many collections, like cards or comic books, need special insurance to cover the actual value of the items, not just the price. You don’t want to be reimbursed only five cents for that first appearance of Batman in Detective Comics. Again, make sure your move is covered by your insurance.
Be Very Careful When Packing
Obviously you are going to pack a record collection very differently than you would pack a wine collection. The key is that when you are moving your collection you take the necessary time to get it all packed and packed properly. Now is not the time to spend less on packing materials or skimp on bubble wrap.
Take your time and individually wrap what might need it. If your collection is in a box or container already, make sure that it won’t pop open during the moving process. If it makes sense, you can individually wrap all of the parts of the collection.
Some things to remember, if you do packing yourself but plan on hiring a Georgina moving company like Bradford moving, you may need to notify them of what it is you packed and why. Many moving companies will not move items that they have not packed themselves.
Label Clearly
Make sure that your packed boxes are clearly labeled with big bold words like “FRAGILE” and “EXPENSIVE.” That way they will end up on the top of the stack of boxes, not underneath your bowling ball collection.
