We’ve all heard them; those horror stories about people moving and having to deal with an array of issues that culminate in skyrocketing additional costs, missing items and serous mental anguish. Here are just a few of the many we have heard from people complaining about past experiences with other companies.
The Hostage Situation – A couple, moving into a new house, thought to save money by finding a ‘moving company’ on Kijiji. Some initial searching yielded a plethora of ‘inexpensive’ companies, and the couple found a company that offered a complete moving package for a flat fee, which seemed reasonable. Even though the company didn’t have a website (nor could the couple find anything online at all) the couple agreed. Moving day arrived and the movers showed up with an unmarked truck, loaded it up, and drove to the new home. Once there however, that flat fee suddenly changed, and additional costs for stairs, heavier items, etc. started to rack up. The movers refused to unload anything from their truck until these additional fees were paid, essentially holding the couple’s belongings hostage.
Better Late Than Never? – An young guy living downtown without access to a large enough vehicle to move his apartment found an ad for moving services on a lamppost offering reasonable rates and quality service. In a bit of a time crunch, this individual called the company and agreed on a date. On moving day, with all of his belongings packed up, he waited for the movers to arrive. After 4 hours and several phone calls, the ‘company’ finally showed up. The resulting rush meant the truck was packed haphazardly, resulting in several broken items. The individual has since taken the company to court.
Broken Promises and Monumental Miscommunications – A busy couple looking for a moving company to take care of everything did some research online and settled on a company that offered all-in-one moving services at a great rate. Although some questionable reviews did spark concern and even though communications with the company seemed to leave much to be desired, come moving day the couple assumed everything would be ok. Having contracted the services of the company and being promised packing by the company, the couple had not done very much on the day of the move. However, the company arrived with an empty truck and no supplies. After leaving and returning, the disgruntled employees eventually packed the couple’s belongings with what could only be called distain, and the couple was eventually charged for the extra hours to return with packing supplies. Their original quote quickly doubled.
