We’ve all dealt with it – the inevitable “I need more space” conundrum that often ends in a garage sale or trip to the dump or recycling facility. Sure, maybe this is a conversation that keeps coming up and actually signifies it is time to move on up, but when selling and moving to a larger home isn’t exactly a space-making option, these home storage solutions might just do the trick!
Stock up on storage containers of all sizes. When items are strewn around the house it can quickly start to look messy. Not only that, these items can easily take up space that could be better served for something else. With storage containers, especially the stackable kind, you can clear the items not used regularly and store the containers in a closet or under a bed.
De-clutter. Make a concerted effort to go through your home and think realistically about what you use and what you don’t. Even if you try, on a regular basis, to get rid of things you don’t habitually use, there are likely a whole range of items that are passed over during this exercise. Instead, take the time to do a complete once over and really get rid of the clutter, or make it a weekly habit of getting rid of one or two items that unnecessarily take up space.
Think about adding a bookshelf or two to an unused wall. Sure, this may seem like a bit of a move in the opposite direction, but if you utilize those bookshelves correctly they can actually provide a lot of extra space. With baskets or boxes, these shelves can become incredibly functional storage spaces for items of all sizes, and when packed away in containers are not an eyesore.
Think about double-duty pieces. A minimalist TV stand may look great, but one that offers storage space as well as function is even better. A nightstand that offers a cubby underneath can be a great place for extra storage. Ottomans with removable lids are great places to store bulky blankets, keeping them within arm’s reach when kicking back on the couch.
Rent a portable storage unit. Ok, so you’ve done a major overhaul of items that perhaps don’t get the attention that their space deserves, but you still don’t want to get rid of them. Renting a portable storage unit, one that you can either keep on your property or have picked up and stored at the company’s facility, can give you the room that you need to finally stop fussing over space.
