Very few people move often enough to get really familiar with movers and moving. That means there can be a lot of myths and misunderstandings about moving and finding the right moving company.
We’ve already pointed out some moving fiction in ‘Separating Moving Facts from Fiction’, including all moving companies are the same; it’s cheaper to move yourself; and if you have lots of cardboard boxes, your stuff will be OK during your move.
Here are some ‘facts’ about movers and moving. Can you guess which ones are true and which are false?
1. “The Movers Will Move Everything”
False!: For legal, safety and liability reasons, the moving company will not move everything in your home. Be sure to ask the movers for a list of things they won’t move. It can include perishable items like food and plants and hazardous and/or flammable materials.
2. “Labelling Every Single Box in as Much Detail as Possible is a Good Idea”
True!: Yes, it can be time consuming to label boxes according to where they are going n the new home and even listing some of their contents on the box. But if you have to search for just one thing through lots of boxes, or you end up moving boxes back and forth in your new home because they’re all in the wrong room, you’ll be glad you labelled!
3. “All Your Furniture and Belongings are Protected by the Moving Company’s Insurance”
False!: Even when you use a reliable moving company, you will get basic insurance coverage, but it will not be enough to replace your belongings. You can usually get extra insurance coverage for an extra premium. If you are concerned about insurance, make sure to ask your moving company representative about it before the move. If you have a home insurance policy, your belongings may be covered during the move, so you may not need any additional coverage.
