Living in Barrie

Barrie is a booming Ontario city that rose to be the 34th largest city in Canada with a population of 135,000. It is within the vicinity of many Ontario Ski Resorts, making it a great winter getaway. In the summer, Barrie’s lakefront parks are a popular destination for Toronto visitors seeking a break from city life. These parks include walking and bicycle trails, a fountain park, three public beaches and free parking.

In the winter, Barrie tends to receive significant snowfall from the lake-effect from Georgian Bay. An average of 238 centimetres of snow falls annually, which is perfect for the many nearby ski resorts. In addition, downtown Barrie is home to numerous annual festivals and events such as The Barrie Waterfront Festival, Barrielicious, Winterfest, Celebrate Barrie, Ecofest, Jazz & Blues Festival, Barrie Film Festival, and more.

The Evolution of Barrie

Barrie began as an establishment of houses at the foot of the Nine Mile Portage. Beginning as an aboriginal transportation route that existed centuries before Europeans came to Simcoe county. The Nine Mile Portage was actually a key part of the supply line for the British Military in the War of 1812 and is still marked along Springwater Township.
Most importantly, Barrie was the final destination of one branch of the Underground Railroad in the mid 19th Century, helping enslaved Americans to enter Barrie and the surrounding area for freedom. By 1846, with a population fo about 500, Barrie was mostly populated by the English, Irish and Scottish. Businesses included three taverns, six stores, three tanneries, a wagon maker, a bakery, a cabinet maker and six shoemakers, as well as a bank.
Fast forward to current times, Barrie has emerged as a bedroom community for Toronto and is now a designated Urban Growth Centre by the Province of Ontario.
