Moves are never easy and the one where you leave the home your family grew up in might be the worst. Not only will you have all the usual stresses, but you’ll need to deal with the emotions too. And you’ll have to figure out what to do with all the stuff you have in a four-bedroom house so you can fit comfortably into a one-bedroom condo.
If there’s any silver lining, it’s that lots of people have made the same move and it can be done – with the right planning.
Here are just a few things to consider and do to make your downsizing move easier, and less costly.
1. Start Planning ASAP or Sooner
This is true for any move, but it’s way more crucial for a downsizing move because of the added chore of getting rid of many of your belongings.
2. Thin the Herd
Get rid of everything that you can bear to part with. This is way easier said than done. Go for the low hanging fruit first. Make plans to get rid of anything that is junk, or you haven’t used for over a year, or that you have more than one of, or that you can simply do without, or that you simply can’t use in your new place.
3. Recycle, Sell and Donate or Give Away
Try to throw out as little as you can. Your municipality probably has drop-off depots that will recycle lots of things. If you have anything of value, think about selling it online or in a garage sale. You can donate things to your favourite charities or simply give them away to friends and family.
4. One Room at a Time
It’s tough to take on the entire downsizing task at once. Try working on one room or area at time to make the entire job easier to manage.
5. Remember the Storage Option
A looming deadline for getting rid of things can be just as stressful as anything else. If you rent a storage unit, you will give yourself some extra time to clear everything out.
