Parting is such sweet sorrow. While those words were uttered by Juliet to the love of her life, Romeo, they’re just as true about leaving your home to move to a new one. You’re moving for a reason, and you’re excited about living in a new place, but you’ll definitely miss the old home.
Especially if you’re downsizing after living in a home for decades, the move can be more emotionally stressful than usual.
Here are just a few ways to make it less so.
Take Something with You
While your furniture and belongings will come with you, but there may be a part of your old home that uniquely reflects its character and that can remind you specifically of the home. Something like a light fixture or switch plate can be just the thing. But, you should buy replacements for anything attached to the house and make sure you’re clear to the people buying the home about what you plan to take with you.
Take Lots of Photos
If you’ve been in the home a long time, you probably have lots of pictures of it. But you can’t have too many if you’re trying to soften the blow of moving out.
Bring Something from the Garden
Even if you’re not an avid garden, perhaps there’s a shrub or cutting you can take with you to plant in your new garden.
Have a Party
One of things you might miss about your old house is the neighbours that made it a great place to live. Inviting them over for a goodbye party, or inviting smaller groups for a number of get togethers, is a great way to bring closure to your time in the house. You might even want to have friends and family over to share just one more memory in the old house.
No matter how sad it might be the leave the old house, at least you can look forward to the new life and the new memories you’ll be creating in your new home.
