Moving your home or business can be hectic. And when things get hectic, it makes sense to look for the fastest solution to any issues. But when that comes time to get rid of things in your home you no longer want, the fastest solution, throwing them out, can turn your move into an environmental disaster.
Instead of simply tossing everything into the trash, if you put just a little extra time and thought into how best to dispose of your unwanted things, you can reduce how much you send to overflowing landfills and maybe even end up with a little extra money in your pocket.
Sell, Giveaway, Donate, Recycle
To make it faster and easier to decide what to do with something other than throw it out, think first about if you can sell it, either online or to an acquaintance. If selling isn’t an option, see if there’s someone you know who could use the item and simply give it to them. Anything you can’t give away can perhaps be donated to a local charity. Finally, if you really do have to throw something out, do everything you can to make sure it gets recycled rather than just sent to the dump.
Use Your Neighbours’ Recycling
You’ll have lots of your regular blue-bin recycling before, during and after your move. If your blue bin is beyond full, instead of putting the extra in the regular garbage bin, talk to your neighbours and ask if they mind you putting your extra recycling in their blue bin if there’s space.
Use Recyclable Materials
This one’s fairly easy, but you can miss opportunities if you’re not careful. Make a note to use recyclable materials in anything you buy to help you move. In the case of packing materials, you’ll probably already use lots of recyclable cardboard boxes and newspaper for wrapping. But if you need to use packing peanuts, look for the biodegradable versions rather than the polystyrene kind.
Yes, moving is hectic. But if you do everything you can to make your move greener, it’ll be a more rewarding move too.
